Fourth round: 12 teams (teams ranked 1–6 by CONCACAF and six third round winners) were divided into three groups of four teams to play home-and-away round-robin matches. The top two of each group advanced to the fifth round.

Fifth round: The six teams which had advanced from the fourth round played home-and-away round-robin matches in one group (often referred to as the "Hexagonal"). The top three qualified for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, and the fourth-placed team advanced to the inter-confederation play-offs.

Difference is auto qualify into the hex v. Having to qualify for the hex.

The Hex is still the Hex and we didn't make it out of the Hex last time. It's not that hard to understand.

We go from having to be the top 3 of 12 to the top 3 of 6...

It's one less round for us to screw up

But this was never a problem. Your argument was that it was now impossible to not qualify with the new format. All I'm saying is that if we continue to play the way we've been playing the last 2 years, we're going to finish 5th or 6th again in the Hex.

Fair enough. I'm just saying it's far more likely we get hot for 6 games and qualify now than us having to survive two competitive rounds

Having to play in the 4th round was not the reason we sucked in the Hex last cycle. World Cup qualifying was so spread out that there is no such things as a team "getting hot".

But could it have been this cycle? With this team and coach?
