Todd Grantham's Gator Defense: A closer look

First, he's never coached in Tiger Stadium.
He's known as a defensive wizard.
Florida has studs all over the roster, and certainly on the defense.
Ok. Now let's look at how Florida has accumulated their 2019 statistics.
Miami, Tenn-Martin, Kentucky, Tennessee, Towson and Auburn.
Of those, only Auburn ranks in the Top-50, coming in at 38th in total offense. Several are ranked at or above 100th or so.
Meanwhile, pinch yourself once again, LSU is ranked #1 in all of CFB in total offense, and has set the all-time SEC record for points scored in 5 games.
Put all that into consideration, and Saturday night in Death Valley on national TV, with relatively little starting experience for the Florida QB's.
Yes, Mr Graham is a strong DC. Yes, Florida has lots of talented Defenders.
But yes, the only test they have faced offensively was against a true freshman in Nix, who was on the road in Florida on their home turf.
My initial predict was 37-20.
but...I'm changing it to 40-20.

He will do some "secret playbook" disguises for blitzes AND non-blitzes.
But for the most part, Grantham will run his system like he always does. Like most coaches do. There won't be a plethora of surprises.
However, the name of the game will be in the adjustments. When he adjusts, do we counter-adjust (yes we will indeed) AND how fast do we do those adjustments.
Fast enough to avoid a catastrophe?
Fast enough to negate his moves?
Or better yet... fast enough to make him pay for them?

Yes. This will be a key.

LSU is 2-3 vs a Todd Grantham defense. In the two wins LSU scored an average of 36 points (42 vs UGA 2011, 29 vs Louisville 2016) and in the three losses LSU scored an average of 22.3 points (41 vs UGA 2013, 7 vs MissSt 2017, 19 vs FU 2018)
The two wins were neutral site games (SEC Champ & Citrus Bowl) & the three losses were home games for Tom Grantham.
What's my point? frick Florida

That's Steve E's downfall is making adjustments in game

I saw an interview with Grantham saying that our offense this year isn't much different than last, only we're executing at a higher level.
Maybe this was before their film study?

quote:Yes, to a degree. He's not unique in the fact that it's like a WWI general, hard to break tendencies and old 'tried and true' tactics. Consequently, they've already out adjusted you because they know your first response. I.e., your adjustment, if predictable, is your own doom.

But I want to highlight the speed or frequency of adjustments. Many DC's make a living off of opposition's 'halftime adjustments'.
If that's all you are doing, adjusting at halftime when you can have a school circle and a whiteboard, A) your offensive system sucks, you shouldn't need a school circle to adjust and B) you are limiting yourself to man vs. man, not scheme vs. man because it is not enough frequency.
In an attacking offense, which we have now, the system itself looks for D adjustments and responds to them at least within 5 plays. Preferably next play or 2.
S shows run support while CBs looked like straight up man; at snap S blitzes and CBs drop into inside leverage zone (1 over the top). The next time you see that your WR and QB already know that the most likely open spot is on the sideline before the 1 over the top can rotate over. Point is, if your system doesn't suck then it is going to LOOK for that adjustment, not just respond to it. Hence it is constant adjustments (school circle not needed).
