Civil Engineer Salary- Before/After PE

CM salary thread on the OT got me thinking about this. I approaching my time to submit docs for my PE. I’d like to get an idea of what to ask for/expect as far as raises if any of you have experience in this area.
From what what I can tell 3x billing rate is a ballpark figure. But i once I have my PE my rate will increase by like 30% and a 10% raise is quite a bit higher than what I’ve seen thus far. Trying to find what’s in line and reasonable.
Thanks.

Will you actually stamp drawings? If not, 5-10%

in the consulting world i got a PE and didn’t get any bump...
left that job and went somewhere that doesn’t require a stamp. we give our employees an $800 salary bump for their PE and take away two years from the standard progression

I got a 22% raise after PE but I also pulled a heavy load in a small office

15% if you are stamping, that's what my buddy in a small civil firm got.

What industry are you working in? If you’re at a small civil firm doing municipal work that would be a different salary than an engineer doing industrial structural work.

depending on the company and their policies. I had a friend who got a raise and they even back paid him from the time he took the exam until he found out he passed.

4-5% and possibly a bonus in the $2-4k range. It highly depends on the company. There is no industry standard.

I got a 7% Bc they didn’t want to go to upper management and request more. I was not very happy.
Quickly transferred out of that group and worked out a plan with the new boss. I got 10% ~5 mo after the 7%, another 10% at end of year.

Thanks guys. Firm I work for probably does 80% state/local public works vs 20% private clients (mainly oilfield)

I received my PE in the middle of the Great Recession, so it was like a 3% raise. I think 10% is probably more typical, but it depends on how much value the PE stamps brings to your company.

It will depend heavily on the company and industry. My company gives about a 3% raise. Right after passing I was contacted by a bunch of firms and parlayed that into a 20% raise at my current job. Even if you don't receive a large raise from your current company you should test the market to see what the market believes is your new worth.

yea if your the only PE stamping you can expect a raise. When you are just another in a whole pot of PEs you arnt getting a raise.
IMO the PE is required in CE. so you are expected to get it. therefore you shouldnt get a raise..... unless you are the one signing everything. Even then a 4 year gu ethically usually doesnt have the experience to sign most drawings outside of earthwork or basic civil layouts.

I agree that 10% is a reasonable number, but there are a lot of variables. More importantly, it should increase your upper bound of salary in the future. You'll cap out a good bit higher if you're stamping a lot of drawings.
