This is the main reason imo. If he has one bad day at qualifying, he misses the Olympics as an American. As a swede he's assured of going.
This is such a copout. What kind of athlete is afraid of competition when the alternative is NOT representing the country in which you were born and raised because it’s easier?
ETA: I’m a huge Mondo fan and went to high school with his dad and uncle, but I’ll never understand someone passing on the chamce the represent the USA because the alternative is “easier”.

Lol
Like you or anyone else in here has any clue what it's like to make that kind of decision.

It's not being scared of competition. It's the fact that US track and field refuses to stop handicapping our athletes by using a moronic qualifying system. As others have said, pole vault is incredibly technical and very dependent on a ton of conditions. One meet shouldn't be the way we determine who to send to represent the US.
Think of it this way: would you think it's a good idea for LSU to recruit players based on a one day recruiting workshop or by examining their entire body of work?

It’s also about training and money. I am pretty sure Sweden covers all of his training and travel costs. I think they also pay for his coach as well. I do not think USTAF does any of this.

This is a foolish statement.

So go get really good at pole vaulting and do what you think (key words) he should do.
