Hunting more places where my cell phone is getting it done. Couple things I would like...
1) preloaded maps, preferably with all of LA and MS public lands
2) tracking feature
3) $500 or less
found this one on CL

No. I will recommend you OnX Maps, download the map to your phone, it will work just fine. Much better than pissing your money away on a Garmin that will be out of date before you unbox it (speaking as a longtime Garmin buyer).

Nothing wrong with that one. Check out rokslide classifieds. I also like the idea on onx and dl your area. I do this and bring a handheld as backup. You can find a garmin 64 for cheap. Then buy a onx chip of whatever state you hunt in. Best of both worlds

Look at Garmin inReach mini. Can Bluetooth connect to phone with Earthmate app. Basically makes your phone a satellite messenger and gps. Nice when you have no service to be able to stay in touch.

Have the garmin Inreach explorer myself. Great for peace of mind when in remote areas.

What about remote areas? Most of the hiking I did in Colorado we did not have service (which was nice).

I have used OnX going on 3-4yrs now. I have zero service in some areas and the tracker, location and maps in general do not work or cannot load in the areas I'm going

My garmin 64 eats batteries and is not as user friendly as my old etrex

You have to download the map area ahead of time. Then the phone’s gps doesn’t need service. It will work as a stand-alone gps using the maps you downloaded

I know about that feature and have tried it. Seems to be hit or miss. When I used it this weekend it tracked me for about 2mi in. After that it kept saying I was at the last location it picked me up at, even when I was about 3mi past there.

I have a Garmin 64S with the on-x chip for Louisiana. Got a year free of the phone app with the chip purchase. I love mine. I’m about to buy the Missouri chip for my trip next month.

You can download the map to your phone. OnX has an "offline" mode where service is not necessary if you have downloaded the map. Before you head out to hike, download the map of the area and you're good to go.

You can even download google maps for offline use. Works great without cell service. I’ll do that when going into remote areas just to have an idea of where roads are Incase I have to bail out early.
All sorts of apps for offline use with a smartphone. I’ll make maps with caltopo and open them with Avenza app. It will be a pdf that works with gps.
OnX is badass for hunting the little I know about it.
I have an inreach but only use it for texting. I may go to the mini soon since I never use the screen on the inreach.
