My girlfriend, her dog, and I were in a canoe a few weeks ago at Lake Martin(Alabama.) We went to the end of this slough that turns into a narrow creek that goes way back into the woods.

We got about 100 yards or so back into the creek, and come around a little bend, and there are two large water moccasins in the middle of the creek, with their heads raised out of the water, staring right at us. We stopped, and they immediately started swimming directly towards the canoe.

The dog was tied to the middle of the canoe(because earlier she was trying to move around a lot from one end of the canoe to the other.) Fearing that the dog would see the snakes and leap out, possibly tipping us over towards the snakes, she tried to preemptively subdue the dog, while I tried to calmly reverse. Well, I reversed badly, and got us stuck on a tree that had fallen that was in the water.

Thankfully, the snakes stopped when the canoe stopped, and they changed directions, and went left towards the bank. They were about 5 feet from us at that point.

Had they have kept approaching the canoe, I suppose I would have tried to paddle the shite out of the water right in front of them, or on top of them. I'm thinking that they were patrolling a den back there. It was kind of scary, but also pretty exciting.

Anyone else ever get chased by venomous snakes? What is the best course of action in this situation?

You live in Alabama and don’t carry a gun? Sounds like a problem only for a beta

Blasting water moccasins with a shotgun is a vivid memory of my childhood. My father owned some property with a creek that guaranteed you would see multiple snakes every trip out there.

No, you didn’t.

Snakes don’t charge people. They swam in your general direction. If they were “charging” you, they wouldn’t have turned away when they had you right where they supposedly wanted you.

WOW!

This is what happens 99.9% of the time. Snakes very rarely pursue a human. They will defend themselves when cornered but their first choice of action is to escape.

If any of this is true, it is likely that the snakes were diamondback water snakes (which are thick like a cottonmouth). Cottonmouths stand fast or retreat when they encounter something. Contrary to what you hear, they are not aggressive.

Diamondback water snakes are feisty as hell and are known to be pugnacious.

There's a video of a guy that goes to an island loaded with water moccasins. None of them come out to get him or show any signs of aggression.

Moccasins, like most snakes, don't attack. Normally, the only way you get bit is if you stumble upon them suddenly without notice. They fear humans, and strike out of defense.

I really, really doubt these 2 snakes were charging you. They were probably clueless to your even being there.

Only way to stop them is to take away their credit cards.
