I lost my job in 2012 and went back to technical college under the GI Bill to become a certified welder. There's plenty of rehabilitation programs that can be funded at the local level to help disabled workers get back to work under apprenticeships. I honestly think Trump should focus also more on promoting nuclear energy as the future over coal or gas if libs are serious about saving the planet

How many welders does coal country need?

Those areas would need a different industry to materialize in their areas. You can just retrain them all to do new joba that don't exist.

As long as government is not picking winners and losers like regulating the coal industry so that “energy prices necessarily skyrocket” let the market determine the energy source. I believe that’s the conservative argument for all energy sources including green energy.

America is not even the Saudi Arabia of coal. We're the United States and Persian Gulf region (petroleum equivalent), combined, of coal.

We should leverage every natural resource we have to remain the dominant political, diplomatic, economic and military force the world has ever seen.

Why not all of them?

Nuclear energy is still the most expensive producer of electricity per KW hour in the U.S.

We can do both, you know.

Mine the coal. Promote nuclear.

There is a never ending demand for energy.

Britain is still importing coal. China is burning a shite ton of it.

Exactly. Can we prevent the Russians from using nuclear?

There is absolutely nothing the government can do to "bring jobs back" or "send them overseas" to begin with. They should not be trying to do either one.

Get the government out of my workplace.

Why should the people subsidize nuclear power? When fossil is far cheaper to make?
Plant Vogtle has already doubled it's construction budget and is still 5 years away from producing electricity. It can't make back the cost in its lifetime.
Think about this... already cost more than it can make back before it has to be entombed for eternity, and still has 5 more years to go before it comes on line.
The cost of a new plant today would be higher than Vogtle.
Atom smashing costs a lot to make a little. Gas and coal costs a little to make a lot... and keeps people working.

those people can move if need be. The jobs don't have to be in a specific "country".
