But McCoy has proven he can be a stud in Reid’s system. Maybe Williams is the insurance here. $3 mil is $3 mil. They could’ve just kept Carlos Hyde if they were interested in backup insurance. They’ve been hyping Darwin all offseason

And yea, exactly, they’re trying to win a SB, hence the signing of McCoy

Reid doesn’t employ backfield timeshares. I see him giving McCoy first crack at evaluating from there

While true, McCoy is much better than Hyde at this point regardless of role.

Just to shed a little light on the money:

McCoy was also being courted by the Chargers and other teams. Chiefs had to pay up to get him. They know the market is tight for RBs with experience that can catch and pass protect. They went out and got him at market price

Williams signed his contract on 12/27. He had exactly 36 carries and 19 catches with 5 total TDs at this point after Hunt had been cut. He hadn’t finished the season yet, and he had yet to have his two big playoff games. Then he came out and totes the rock 25 times in the first playoff game with 5 catches and a TD. Then second game he scores 3 TDs. He and his agent made a bad move and signed too early. Nobody knew he’d be a stud in the playoffs and he signed too early for small cash

Judging this situation by money doesn’t make sense with the above. Judging by stats doesn’t either, McCoy is 31 and has played 10 years of football and has an injury history and had his worst season in years last year. Chris Ivory came in as his backup last year and was more efficient and effective, so you can’t just make the case that the Bills were bad. Williams was a monster in the playoffs and looked like a great fit in the offense

The main case for McCoy over Williams is familiarity at this point. But to me that’s a great case for him as a backup to Williams and will play some downs in relief of him. I don’t think McCoy gets the majority touches based on that familiarity with Reid
