Engineering Career Advice - Mechanical, Chemical, Petroleum

Son starts school at Clemson next week. Mechanical engineering is a possibility but he also keeps talking about Petroleum or Chemical engineering. I'm ignorant of the long term prospects in PE versus ME or CE. Clemson is also not in PetroChem country so maybe that's an issue. Opinions appreciated.
Unrelated footnote: Great Grandpa is an ME from LSU(1930s), Grandpa is CE from LSU (1969). Geaux Tigers.

ETA: I am a petroleum engineer but it is very focused as a curriculum. PetE is a great career but you can get a job as a PetE with a degree in the other two

People will talk shite here (which is weird on a LSU board) but LSU has one of the best Engineering programs in the country. And with the new facilities, they finally have the labs and shops to match. You need to talk your kid into transferring.

This. The opportunities are more plentiful for mechanical or chemical. Petroleum may have some higher paying options initially, but with a little experience it doesn't matter much. That's one good thing about engineering in general, with a little experience one can transition into another field.

I’m a petroleum engineer and I would not advise anyone pursue petroleum engineering for the foreseeable future.

ME is the most marketable of the options

I work in a field that has alot of engineers, we are always looking for electrical engineers over any other type. Mechanical engineers seem a dime a dozen but it's hardto find electrical engineers. If it were me that what I would do.

Graduated as a Petroleum Engineer as well... Even the main Society of Petroleum Engineers is advising people to become computer science majors instead with a minor in petroleum than outright major in Petroleum Engineering.
Go do computer science.
Go do computer science.

I agree with that too
Chemical Engineering, Computer Science, or Software Engineering

I am a Civil Engineer, I would steer away from petroleum engineering. I would learn more towards mechanical. I actually graduated in Environmental but didn't want to deal with the government regulations on providing me work so I have been a civil since graduation. Typically you can get through the first 2 years of classes before decisions on Majors are critical.

I’ll graduate from ChemE this May.
I can’t wait to see what my future holds.

Wouldnt bother with a minor in anything but also agree with computer science over everything else and it isn’t close.

My aunt was a Chemical Engineer and made a butt load of money. I also have a friend that’s a Mechanical Engineer who does well, but not nearly as well as my aunt.

LSU’s engineering program is trash. Should have went to GT, Westpoint, hell any other school really.

Assuming he can pass all of the entry level engineer classes ChemE or ME are the only answers. Those two degrees can do virtually every other one's job

LSU is in a three way tie for 106th best in the country according to US News.LINK
CE probably has the brighter future over PE.

What about electrical? You get the pay level of chemical engineers but the best job security of any engineering discipline. It is also the most diverse of any of the engineering trades. You do everything from quantum mechanics level research to utility level power distribution. There are jobs on the owner side, consulting side, research side, etc.

US News doesn't rank quality of education. It is only a numbers game.

Chemical engineering is like that as well, hell, most of them are.
You can be on the research, owner, consulting side with any of them.
And then each one of course has their own specialty
