Look at Unico 2087. The beach is not great there — even when there is no seaweed, but go for the pools, food and drink quality, service and rooms. The whole style is like Restoration Hardware meets Modern Mexico. The restaurants were unbelievably good. Every inch was perfectly clean and smelled amazing —- even in the outdoor hallways — not sure how they did that! They also offer excursions and spa at a discounted price.

Also look at Excellence Playa Mujeres (always very highly rated), Secrets Maroma, Valentin Imperial Maya, Secrets Akumal.

There is a new AI in Playa Mujeres called Atelier Playa Mujeres — it has been in soft opening and is getting rave reviews. The pics look beautiful and the prices are a little cheaper right now.

We just got back from Atelier. Pretty sweet as occupancy was around 20% but I suspect it will be a different experience when fully booked. TripAdvisor reviews are pretty spot on but I haven’t seen one mention the snorkeling. Sea grass beds start about 15 yards from the beach and are teaming with life. 30-40 yards out was just as good as any excursion you would pay with the added bonus of no one around to bother you.- (no lifeguard either) I’d go back just for the snorkeling as long as rates don’t jump dramatically. Sargassum was minimal when we were there 7/27-8/3.
