Anyone paid for a fitting?

Yes, lots of people have. It's the 2nd best thing you could spend your money on after lessons. IMO

I'm a +15 handicap but have heard good things from friends on getting a fitting.

Any skill level besides someone who's never played golf could benefit from a fitting. The questions is do you want to invest the time and money to get better.

Looking at about $250 here in Nashville for the full bag and figure it would be good to know what kind of clubs and balls work for my hack arse game.

Seems reasonable, do your research as not all fitters are created equal. Getting the dude at you local golf galaxy to "fit" you is not always the best

Initial thought was to just go hit all the brands then be a cheap arse and buy what works well online but interested in others experiences.

My fitter will match any advertised price. Most fitters offer some sort of credit from the fitting fee if you purchase clubs, so unlikely to save money otherwise.

My tips:
1) go to a demo day or a store and hit a lot of different brands to find some you like. Your fitting shouldn't be you trying to try 15 different brands. Then say, I like brand XYZ, what else do you think we should throw in the mix.
2) Don't go in rusty, you should be swinging your clubs a few times a week for a couple weeks leading up to your fitting. Don't worry if you suck, at least you will be sucking predictably and not just rusty
3) Do you research on fitters
4) You don't need to get your whole bag fitted immediately. Find the biggest whole in your game. Can't get your drive in the fairway? Start there. Can't hit the green with your irons to save your life? Start there.
