Nah. I bet the impact would be the USD would sell off like 3% the day after and interest rates would barely move
Why do you think more would happen? Every country is engaged in massive stimulus (the supposed boogeyman of money printing causing "hyper-inflation). China is the worst. Where would they go? What do you think would supplant the USD and the UST?

that's because those to programs are un touchable. Really neither party has the balls to do it so why even have the conversation.

It's not a lack of balls. The voters love those programs. Our representational government is working correctly as designed.

This is why I say the budget situation is hopeless. Until the public starts clammoring to cut SS and Medi and is willing to actually vote for it... it's only a matter of time.

That's why it so silly for Democrats to constantly point the finger at Republicans and say "See, they spend a lot too". Show me a democrat (or republican) who's seriously talking about cutting SS and MEDI...

No politician of any party is going to fix it. Ask GWB what happens you try to change SS even a little bit.

End welfare and food stamps for those undeserving.

Tax remittances back to Latin American countries at a rate of 35%.

End all "Foreign Aid."

End The War on Drugs.

Overhaul how military contracts are given. In other words, get rid of all the fraud, waste, and abuse that goes on in the budgeting of military hardware contracts.

Build. The. fricking. Wall.

Annual Tax Revenue is $3.643T, debt is $22.3T. You have to pay off the debt in 10 years.
That leaves you with an operating Federal Budget of $1.413T.
Current spending is $4.407T.

This problem has been building up for decades, and honestly, I don't see it ever improving.

If we could just stop adding new debt, that would be huge. Then, try to get 500B surplus and pay it down over a long time.

Because every voter believes SS and Med is a program that they paid into, so damnit, they deserve benefits!

I think it was intended to be a social safety net, a sort of welfare if you will, but that's not how it ended up.

I’d limited the Federal Government to the following.

1. Federal courts
2. Congress
4. Executive

Under the chief executive would be:

1. State Dept.
2. Defense Dept.

And that’s it. The federal gov. Would pass, enforce, and interpret law. It would defend our nation and conduct foreign policy/relations.

And nothing else.

The OP is presenting a hypothetical. What will happen is irrelevant in a hypothetical.

I’ve paid into something for 30 years. Whatever that is, I would prefer to get my money back at some point.

To me, it never should have been treated any differently than any other tax or any other spending program.

We don't pay special taxes for any other sort of welfare program.

But because we segregated it, and because the government tells us we will get something from it based on what we earned, it has become a "I paid into it, I need it back" program.

SS and MED, from the moment the bills was written, was a program destined for future failure.

In order to even begin reducing our debt/deficit, we need to get rid of baseline budgeting allowance passed by our congress many years ago.

It's a cowards way out of saying I never voted to increase spending, "it just happens"

Use social media, rallies and State of the Union to tell everyone that there is going to be an increase of 1% on the US budget. Explain that over and over that there is going to be an increase that is not the baseline automatic approval of 10% increase

Do this for 5-10 years and I would imagine we would reduce our debt a decent amount.

No matter the question, this is always the answer with Democrats.
