pretty much this
Now, I did give this one a much more serious initial look (compared to 10K, for example), but I'm liking it as an album more than 10K even at this point, and 10K gets better every time, just more slowly.
My first introduction to Tool was way after the fact (early 2000s) and I started with just Undertow and Ænima. I didn't start listening to Opiate or Lateralus until much later. So, 10K was the only launch before FI that I was already a fan of the band. I was blown away by all the albums launched before I knew anything about them. I'm getting there with 10K and FI, but more slowly.

In fact, FI is growing on me now, but not Pneuma.
Okay, frick it, Pneuma is growing on me now, but sonovabitch, Invincible is a fantastic song.

I've been team Pneuma since the leak (also, protip: don't google the misspelling Penuma )
But I will say, Invincible and Descending have been growing on me immensely.
7empest is...just holy crap that song live is going to be something to experience.

I liked it immediately, but it is the one that you say, "Would have been just as good, shorter, fellas" more than any other. (And we can almost say it about any of the main tracks of FI )

Just as good, maybe. But MORE length means MORE TOOL and I'm all about that.

Agreed. As this was such a long time coming, I can't begrudge a little indulgently long tracks.
While I still think that Lateralus is the best "heavy" record of the 21st Century, FI may have secured the second spot with me already.

Danny Carey says that TOOL has "tons of material" for a possible follow-up to last month's "Fear Inoculum".
Released 13 years after its predecessor, "Fear Inoculum" debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 album chart. The effort shifted approximately 270,000 equivalent album units in its first week of release, with 248,000 of those in traditional album sales.
Asked in the new issue of Metal Hammer magazine what the future holds for TOOL, the drummer replied: "It's hard to say. We're going to tour on this probably for two or three years at least, I imagine. It feels like what we've done on every album, and then I guess we'll see where we're sitting after that.
"My hope is we get in and knock out another record. We have tons of material. It's not going to take 12 years, or if it does, I'll probably be so old I probably can't pick up my sticks any more! But my hope is we'll do another record and just keep moving forward
quote:
According to Carey, there is now "more motivation" for TOOL to make new music. "The carrot on the stick has gotten larger because now we'll be free agents — we don't have to deal with a record company or if we do, we deal with it on our terms, because we can do whatever we want now," he explained.
"This is the last record of a five-album deal, so that's a good feeling and I hope that will be motivational in the writing processes."

So that's at least 5-6 years at best for a new album.

I don't think so. They cut this one down to fit on a CD, they have entire song riffs and ideas waiting and now with no record label, I'd say 5 tops, likely sooner

I'm just going off what he said in the article. They generally tour for 2-3 years after an album release, then would need 3 years after the tour to complete the album.

I really hope they come to New Orleans or Jackson. I need somewhere closer.

For those that bought tickets on ticketmaster, did they give you some "ticket delay" thing where you can't download your tickets until a date closer to the show?

It's gotten to the point where I can't declare a singular "best" song on the album. Each listen reveals something different, so I've decided the best song is whatever one I'm listening to at the moment, lol...

Sounds like the more material thing is coming out of multiple individuals...
I’m erect right now.
Hopefully only have to wait 2-3yrs this time.

saw somewhere Danny said at least 3 years after touring

I thought he said they would be able to do “3yrs touring on this material”
Doesn’t mean they couldn’t work on the other stuff in between. The good thing is it sounds like they have the framework of everything built, so hopefully it would be a quick turn.
Of course, I could have misread the quote.
Plus, I don’t see Maynard touring 3 straight years with tool... being new Puscifer coming and of course grape season every year. Ha

HAHA! Right. They've already started the fan trolling/carrot dangling. Can't wait to hear the new record in 2045.

this is the quote i saw:
quote:
Asked by Metal Hammer what the future holds for the group, drummer Danny Carey was circumspect, as the band members tend to be in interviews, but also positive about the prospects of a follow-up record. "My hope is we get in and knock out another record," he said. "We have tons of material. It's not going to take 12 years, or if it does, I'll probably be so old I probably can't pick up my sticks any more! But my hope is we'll do another record and just keep moving forward."
"There are no leftover Tool songs because of the process it takes to compose our songs," Carey clarified. "The way we hash it out in a room with all three or four of us, that there's tons of riffs and jams and things. But there's no put-together songs that are sitting in the eaves.
"It'll take a process of doing it. And if we do do another album, it'll take three years after touring. That's just the way it is with our band."
