quote:Both are under 1k.
You spend nearly as much on food as you do on your mortgage? Either your mortgage is very low or your food expenses are super high, or some of both
I bought the house four years ago as a single man with the mindset of “how little can I spend without being uncomfortable?” Instead of “how much house can I afford?”
Now that I’m married, we enjoy the low payment even more. It’s a quiet neighborhood in a decent area of town with lots of necessities within 1/4 mile.

Here is my spending breakout...this is percent of total spending 2018/2019 YTD. I haven't looked as percentages as a percent of take home.
RENT 26.4%
AUTO 17.6%
TRAVEL 14.1%
FOOD 12.2%
ENTERTAINMENT 8.8%
SHOPPING 7.0%
ATM CASH 2.7%
INTERNET & TV 2.5%
GIFT 2.3%
GAS 1.8%
FEES 1.3%
PERSONAL 1.2%
OTHER 1.1%
PHONE 0.8%
The travel figure is slightly higher than I expected but not shocked by it. That represents 8-10 trips of some sort annually.
Rent includes all utilities, insurance, fees, etc.
