That should actually read "I'm still punishing myself for something that happened over 20 years ago".

Regarding the investigator/paralegal/sidekick kinda job approach, for get them. Every time I open applications for a paralegal job I get at least one attorney apply. I always just gloss over them. They are either trying to rehab their career like you or they are licensed in a different jurisdiction. Whether true or not I see them as someone who is just using it as a stepping stone. I don't want to waste time training someone for them just to move on within a year or two.

Quit feeling sorry for yourself, quit punishing yourself, and take and pass the bar. Maybe when you get ethically cleared to take the bar that will alleviate some of your guilt. It ain't rocket science you did it once and you can do it again. Keep in mind that when you do get that piece of paper with all the justice's signatures it is only the start. You may have to hang out your own shingle and do scrivner work like basic wills and $500 divorces along with some criminal defense and low level PI stuff others won't take. Even if you don't get rich you will fix a hole in your pride and maybe you will quit punishing yourself.
