Hopper didnt consider El was capable of making her own decisions. If she wants to make out with a boy in her room for 6 hours every day of the summer, that's her choice. Hopper was being a bit tyrannical in his rage against her independence. A point of suffering for many American females in their teenage years. I agree with the article.

She’s 14 and can barely even function in the real world b/c she grew up as a government lab rat. His first daughter died of cancer. Of course he’s overly protective of her.
