I like to think of myself as a pretty intelligent person but I have zero idea how this is supposed to help traffic. Looks like a joke.

Is it a joke? Are we low key being trolled? How does crossing traffic twice help with traffic?

Advantages. Two-phase signals with short cycle lengths, significantly reducing delay. Reduced horizontal curvature reduces the risk of off-road crashes. Increases the capacity of turning movements to and from the ramps.

If you think about the Loyola I-10 intersection right now, coming from North Kenner southbound on Loyola, if you want to get onto I-10 east, you have to stop at the red light on the westbound side of I-10 (controlling the traffic coming off westbound 10 exit ramp) and you have to stop at the red light on the eastbound side of I-10 (to turn left onto the ramp).

If I understand this correctly, that second red light stop will be eliminated, as you won't have to turn left across the previously northbound traffic lanes.

In east Tenneessee, the main exit on I-40 to the smokies was redesigned to be a double diamond. They never closed the exchange, but it was off season.
