Are people really too lazy to unscrew a cap and dump the oil in a hole??
I don't want to frick with it at my house. The oil filter on my 4Runner is a motherfricker to change. I don't want to frick with used oil. I don't want to lay on my back and get oil all over me. I don't want to deal with messy arse oil drain pans.
I change my oil once every 7,500 miles or so. For me that's about twice a year. I'm okay with the expense to avoid the hassle.

What is this oil filter you speak of?

Let us not forget that these places keep records which are then reported on the Carfax as well as not voiding warranties which give these places a leg-up.

I wish I only had to change oil twice a year.
I’m about to be on my third. I might make it on two more.
