You’re justified in being skeptical.
Nevertheless, this seems like a bizarrely weak attempt at a false flag to instigate war. Seems like they would have staged a more aggressive action if that was their intent.

Iran's economy is collapsing, and their citizens are running out of patience. Iran needs to be seen as a victim of US aggression now more than ever! Iran has incentive to make it look like the US had their fingerprints on that tanker attack.

Not saying it is not a false flag, but I have to believe if it were, at least one of those tankers would have gone to the bottom as a result of the false flag...
The way to bring to Great Satan to its knees is through economic means... What better way than to destabilize the world oil market?
