He didn’t give the Celtics leverage but he sure took it away from the Lakers.
If two similar deals were presented and one was from the Lakers, the other one would get chosen. The Lakers have to clearly beat any other offer to win now, not just be about equal.

The opposite of giving the Lakers more leverage is giving the Lakers less leverage.
