She swam/floated north, though.

True

Let me correct it. Her path was ultimately downstream. But to take the path she took, she would have been swimming upstream the entire way

Basically her highlighted path is impossible with the current movement of the river right now

Makes sense. I’m thinking she went in further upriver and was able to catch the eddy at Algiers Point.

The other thread mentioned that halfway across you get an upstream eddy. So basically half the swim was downstream and the other half upstream. They think she caught the current just right and basically coasted the second half of the swim to make it.

Id love to hear from hydrological types lurking here how that river current really works. I know itll pull you uder but maybe in certain places its just surface current? thats some massive turbulent flow either way. Crazy stuff.

Been a while since I’ve heard the story, but my dad’s buddy said The two of them and another guy did it in the early 70s. Jumped in around algiers point and made it across somewhere around Mereaux where they were warmly greeted by a few St Bernard deputies and other various LEOs. Didn’t go to jail but they were held up a long time and thought they were in deep shite.

My dads a pretty reserved guy but apparently had a daredevil streak in his younger days. He’s never copped to this one, but now that we’re all grown & not quite as impressionable, I’ll ask him for more details next time we talk.
