Put a toddler door knob cover on the knob inside of her room. If she knows how to work one of those, check out the "door monkey." Same idea as locking the door from the outside, but you won't have to mess with the knobs

This has been our answer for night time. Before our daughter turned 2 she mastered the baby gates and they merely slowed her down. They became more of a hazard as she'd stop at the top of the stairs to open it, so we took them down soon after.
