Ace,
I remember the first time I ever heard them when I was a student at LSU in 2000. I was up early (or late) studying for an exam and had the radio on. That beautiful Stevie Ray lick that opens Little Wing came on and I thought to myself "finally a good song on 98.1" and I listened to the whole tune as a break from the books. Then Mr. Walton eased onto the air when Stevie wrapped up and I was immediately a 10%'er. Like you, the boys kept me company on many early morning drives, sleepless mornings with my newborn daughter, and up til now on my day-to-day journey as a late-30's working man. The show wasn't for everyone but it was for me, all the way from Little Wing to Eat It.
Rest easy, Mr. Walton.

Producer Kenny & Johnson now I guess
ETA: unless El Gringo wants to become a regular morning radio show host out of the clear blue

He was like an uncle. I used to love the 1st 30 minutes when Johnson would talk in his regular voice. They’re how I found out about 9-11. I knew it was bad when they used those regular voices. Somehow it was just comforting.
You could always tell Walton was the brains behind that operation. He was genuinely funny and smart as hell.
Huge loss to radio, politics and the south in general.
Rest well uncle John. Thanks for making us laugh at how absurd the world can be.

Through my various bouts of insomnia over the past 20+ years, I would fire up a radio or other streaming access to the show in the pre-dawn hours and "Little Wing" would reinvigorate me for a period of time. The 5:30 "half hour" bit with just John and Steve was a great way to engage the brain for the demands of the coming day. Back in the day, it was more traditional for just Billy Ed to come in around 6 and the three of them would mock Kenneth and, particularly Eaux (CPT) for their tardiness. I noticed more recently that it was possible to get all three in the 6 O'clock hour, depending on the topic du jour.
When my girls were still in school, I remember vividly dropping off one morning during the Tiger Woods "getting his arse whipped with a golf club for chasing whores" saga and it was weeks and weeks into that daily/hourly coverage of the "whore of the day", Billy Ed comes on with, "Tiger Woods is in the news this morning. Couldn't have predicted that."
Good times...

No doubt about it...the first half hour was a table setter for my morning. They didn't force laughs on you, just straight back and forth between two intelligent cats. Despite being handsome (no mo, nttawwt) Walton had a voice meant for radio, strong and smooth like the first cup of black coffee on a new morning. I am going to miss him.

Just hearing of this. At least his spirit is reunited with his son's now. RIP, John...and thanks for all of the great radio moments.

it's very weird to me how many people associate 911 with Walton and Johnson, b/c I can too
back in those days I had my radio set to their station for my alarm b/c their show pissed me off so much it guaranteed i'd get up
I was completely oblivious to 911 during the parts of their show i heard references to the attack. i thought it was some anti-arab skit
then i got to my student job and it was empty. then one of my supervisors grabbed me and pulled me into the conference room where they had a projector going. it wasn't long before the 2nd tower fell

That was during the "Jake is a dirty, commie, hippie", pre-Rant Legend(tm) era.

I first started listening to them in 1990 when I moved back to LA. They were the perfect component to my college years. Of course, I witnessed the firings and re-hiring and split and reunion. I stopped listening when I moved to DC and started back up when I moved back.
John was a great radio man, right up there with Imus, Harvey, Bell, the Greaseman, etc. I don;t know what they're going to do now. I'm sure the contracts they have with stations and advertisers are all going to have to immediately change.
I'n not a huge fan of Ken Webster in that role, but he's good with skits and street interviews and he's better than ending the show. I hope they keep it going somehow.
Maybe they should do open auditions. shite, I'd go.

Grew up listening to W&J in the 80s/90s on 100.7 The Tiger in Baton Rouge. Listened religiously growing up as a teen at my first job, and I still put them on today.
An era has ended, and I bet even if Kenny is the permanent replacement they should still call it the Walton & Johnson show as a tribute.
It's a weird feeling knowing I'll never hear them together again on the radio.
John Walton, you gave me many laughs and made my terrible commutes manageable.
