Both had several great characters, but MASH was too much Hawkeye. At least with Cheers it wasn't always about Sam. My favorite character from each show was Coach and Trapper.

Two of the great TV theme songs of all time.

Definitely Cheers, especially once Frasier becomes a regular and Rebecca replaces Diane.

Cheers was one of the most consistently funny shows to ever see air time.
I never watched it until recently and I've binged up through season 7. I finally understand the Simpsons parody from 25+ years ago (even though Norm has never been an angry drunk).

The first three seasons of MASH are perhaps the greatest run any sitcom ever had. But after that it went downhill rapidly.
Cheers was pretty consistent for its first five years, until Kirstie and that millionaire crap, when it went down slowly but surely.
MASH reaches heights -- Tuttle, Crisis, The Sniper -- that Cheers never reaches. But it also could get very maudlin and preachy, especially once Alda got control.
Alda dominated MASH in a way the rather bland Danson never could on Cheers. Apparently some here regard that as a bad thing.

Yeah I rewatched Cheers recently and Coach and Diane are better than Fat Actress and Woody.
Rebecca was frankly a boring character...that seemed to drag episodes down. The gang would want to have fun and she'd come in as the wet blanket - never understood why the writers thought that was a good angle.
Diane was the antagonist too but in a playful way and always trying to be the moral authority.
Rebecca was just the authority as boss and neutered Sam and the gang at every chance she got.
Mash was awesome the first few years but when Trapper leaves it becomes Alan Alda's show and way too preachy and far less funny...getting away from its roots, the movie.

Cheers with the exception of the first couple of seasons or so was just great comedy tv.
Legitimately crazy. The first couple of seasons were the Coach seasons, baw.
I would take all of Cheers over the BJ/Winchester seasons of M*A*S*H, for sure, and I even like Winchester more than the average M*A*S*H fan. But, the Henry/Trapper seasons of M*A*S*H might get a slight nod. Great television and extremely rewatchable.

On a somewhat related note - which very occasional character had the greatest impact on their respective series:
Ernest T. Bass (Andy Griffith, only 5 episode appearances)
Colonel Flagg (M*A*S*H, 7 episodes)
Harry the Hat (Cheers, just for good measure and keep it on topic, 6 episodes)

Did Mash not hold up well?

Well done period pieces tend to age better because of this reason.
