To Audible or Not to Audible

So my reading list has gotten out of control honestly and my time constraints keep my reading time inconsistent and shortened. I still read pretty much every day, but over the last 24 months, a lot less than I historically have.
I do have a podcast habit, for commutes, travel, etc., that I'd be happy to exchange for an audiobook habit, but I've never wanted to do the audiobook thing. Give me paper, a folded page, a highlighter, all the stuff and just the physical act of sitting down with a book, it just feels right.
Anybody had the same hesitation see value in Audiobooks or have been surprised by enjoying them just as much? I probably wouldn't stop reading, it would just allow me to consume more.

I had considered it, I drive an average of 10-hours a week for work at least.
I'd probably do it more for my 2nd tier book choices, standalone novels, non-fiction and stuff.
But when I look to go buy stuff, the audio books seem so expensive. Not sure what the best way to go about it would be, maybe some sort of streaming / spotify type service for audio books exists?

It’s a must have for travel, plane and car.
I agree with the poster who said use it for secondary stuff.
I use it for time killer novels and I always keep a few big bios or history books I’m interested in.

So do you have to buy individual audio books and download / get a cd or something?
Is there some sort of streaming library service?

I've found some books/writers are better read vs. audio than others. I read on a Kindle though so i think that is a step toward audio books. Join your local library and then download to your phone for free and play through blue-tooth. Book i loved on audio is American Gods N. Gaiman. I also like Donald Westlake writing as Richard Stark about Parker because there are a ton and my library has almost all of them. Plum Island was also good on audio.

Honestly I like it more than I ever expected. And I'm someone with stupid time constraints. And that is part of the reason, when I'm traveling it's really easy to listen while waiting to board, and on the plane, and while cleaning the house, working around the yard, and especially while driving. Most narrators are very good. A few are duds but more often they pull out the stops and get a great cast (American Gods).
If you do it get the email for the Daily Deal. There have been some great books on it. The Brothers Karamazov is one I'd never have done otherwise.

This is good to hear. Were you a traditional book reader or bust before time (and sometimes luggage restraints - No I'm not lugging around Summa Theologica on a flight, or even Don Quixote) got in the way?

I was very much a traditional book reader. Hell, I lugged Infinite Jest over half of Europe. Starting around 6 years ago I mostly went with Kindle for books to read and checked out audio books from the library for driving. I still read books at night but Audible is very handy for travel and when doing mindless stuff around the house.

I transitioned to audiobooks when I got a job which caused me to drive thousands of miles a month. Now even though I have a regular job schedule with a 15 minute commute I still listen, I'm hooked.
I'm in Houston though and I went and got a Houston Public Library card for free, and then was able to listen to their audiobook catalog on Overdrive for free.
I've since transferred over to torrenting them (I buy the physical copy of almost all of the books I listen to so I don't feel bad.)

I love audible. I’ve been a member since they started.
I can see where it’s not for everyone but it works wonders for my schedule.
You will definitely develop certain readers that will become your favorite. My favorite is British guy named John Lee. I believe I would listen to him read a science journal.

I drive between an hour and a half and two and a half hours a day. I enjoy audiobooks. Gotta get ones with good narrators like Robertson Dean or Steven Fry, otherwise they can be a bit tedious. I think it's worth it for sure. I'm listening to Neuromancer. It's tough because of the slang being used but it's good. I've listened to the 3 Body Trilogy, Left Hand of Darkness, Iron Gold, lots of Sanderson, and a ton more, including philosophy and biographies.

I'll add Richard Poe, George Guidall. and Tom Stechshulte to narrators that I enjoy. It definitely makes a difference. And the large cast of American Gods makes it great. The good thing is that Audible will let you return a book if you hate the narrator or story. I couldn't stand the narration of Comanche Moon and returned it quickly. But I have almost 200 titles now (mostly Daily Deals) and that's the only one I've returned. Definitely sign up for the Daily Deal email and keep an eye out for their sales, Audible has some good ones.
Read the reviews before purchasing. Audible shows a rating of 4.5 out of 5 for Comanche Moon but if you read the reviews it quickly becomes obvious that a LOT of people hate the narration.

Yup, I pulled the trigger on this. More expensive overall than I thought, and at my churn rate, it could get out of hand, but we'll see.

I love podcasts but I refuse to do audiobooks. Thats just cheating imo

Maybe.
But my reading list hit triple digits while my reading time is a third of what it used to be. I'd rather cheat a little and get through the list, honestly.
Plus I am being specific with WHAT I use audible for and what I still by physically. I think it's cheating if that's all you do.

Try the overdrive app with your local library...you can download lots of audiobooks for free. Sometimes there is a waiting list for the more popular choices.

I love it and it’s perfect for me. I listen to audiobooks anywhere between 30-40/hrs a week. My type of work allows me to do this, and couldn’t imagine working without it now. It’s an incredible value for me.

I am audiobook 100% of the time due to my commute. I don't think I could go back. If you are looking to "borrow" some audiobooks then check out audiobookbay.
