In college in the mid 2000s I took it from Nashville to Montgomery one time with a stop in Bham. It was like a 30 minute stop and they somehow had overcapacity and I was the last one to get a seat in Bham after having plenty of room from Nashville. No clue how that happened, I was about to be pissed.

The people that ride the Greyhound are those that basically can’t afford to rent a car. Or have a friend that can drive them. Or use anything else but the last possible way to get there. If you don’t book your ticket pretty well in advance it’s actually not that cheap. Like $50 from Bham to Montgomery, more than renting a car for sure but not with one way fees I guess.

Eta: oh yeah here’s another crappy thing about them, they don’t have overnight parking. Like any of them. When I rode it I left my car at the Montgomery airport which I guess had free parking at the time. Then had to taxi a mile or 3.

I used to ride the bus all the time from B'ham to Montgomery and back when I was a kid to visit my grandparents.

I've tried many times to book something for the experience and I'm always shocked at how expensive it is. The one time u had a trip ready I ended up finding a flight for less.

That's partly true, but it all depends on the value of $$ to you, and to me, and to them. I have priced these trips a number of times, and if you are looking at $60 for the rental-car and $125 for the one-way charge and $45 for fuel and $25 more in taxes/fees/new-retractable-roof-stadium-charge..
vs. $29 (or $17 or $ 38) for a MegaBus, that's a pretty big difference.
