What is the story there?

Just my opinion from what I saw from the outside. The board or tournament committee one started questionable/preferential flighting of members in the Spring Classic and Deep South (both were great tournaments btw) and routinely screwed out of town teams so people quit coming. Inevitably caused some internal arguments and some membership moving elsewhere which accelerated the issue.

Man do I miss my days at Shenandoah CC, my parents still live on old 14. Still know that course like the back of my hand
How I wish Just ONE of the mid tier clubs could have survived. If the city had kept one it would have flourished. Pool members, social members, tennis members, golf members.
Instead they all got developed with little chance for the public to help stop it.

Plenty of chance for public to help stop it. They could have gotten memberships.
That is what many don't understand. These places cannot survive unless people support them. And not by just playing public rounds when convenient.

That's Pine Forest in Bastrop, Tx.

Which is the same one the OP linked.

Oh, I didn't see that. there is another thread about a pine forest in Houston. I know the one in Bastrop took a hit a few years back from a major forest fire that destroyed some homes.

Sherwood legit had a membership drive to get the public to open the course back up and they couldn't do it. FWIW.

The push from Sherwood gave me a call to be an “investor” in the new course. I asked if i would receive any equity or a golf membership, the answer was no...

Yea it's a real shame that Sherwood didnt stay. I remember the effort to keep it open. I'm sure property values around the course have plumited since.

I wish it was able to stay own too. Grew up in the neighborhood.
Word was that the irrigation work that was needed for the course was massive

What would you have received for your "investment"?

An open Country/Golf Club. Everyone is always on here saying how they wished these courses were still open. But, when it is time for members to step up you get crickets.
Which to my entire point to the OP is that is why Mid-tier clubs cannot make it, many times.
No one in BR is getting a return on investment from a golf course while BREC / LSU are in the business.

An opportunity to give them something like $5K then pay $400 per month along with 150 other people. There would be no way to play in the weekend. The debt and the work needed was just too much. It wasn’t worth it, and I considered it very hard.

Wish Sherwood would open as a 9 hole course or a par 3 course with the driving range in better shape

Hard to believe that a city like Hattiesburg has better golfing options than BR. Canebrake, Shadow Ridge and Timberton are all nice.
