Make it six if you like. Since you don’t understand the concept you don’t understand it’s being used correctly. As I said before. I’m not sure how to help you.

an individual choosing to obtain an education includes a positive externality on broader society.

This is not correct. From an economic perspective, each individual maximizing their own productivity is a positive for society at large. Only for some people does this involve higher education.

Because the government caused the problem when they guaranteed student loans.

This damn paper was 18 pages of inscrutable academic language, and graphs. Lots of graphs.

They had taken a simple idea, and obscured it behind thousands of words, and pictures.

What the professor wanted us to do, was to understand Lawrence’s point, but more importantly, to be able to write a similar paper.

This is the sort of material they spend their college careers studying

Can confirm

the current value of that piece of paper means increasingly little to a potential employer.

Whats the best fix? I dont know it, but I know I refuse to subsidize the current product. If you want to have some untouched institutions for things like history etc to remain gov hands off. I would be all for that. But for people who are trying to prepare themselves for their career, the current systems do an incredibly poor job of accomplishing that... to varying degrees between differing disciplines.

I don't see any "plan" in the link. It looks to me like a bunch of talking points but nothing specific.

Eventually the government will all but write these loans off unfortunately.

The education bureaucracy is bloated because of this easy access to money.

We need to end such easy access and frankly we should convert the universities into private institutions and get the government out of the university management business. We can use the money we have been spending on them to fund vouchers for higher ed. This will create competition for students and hopefully lower cost as the profit motives of private institutions will squeeze cost.

Schools accepting federal funds would have to share in the burden of unpaid student debt. How it would work is unclear, but the goal is clearly to improve job placement and push students towards careers with higher probability for loan repayment.

So gummint is going to tell your kids what they can major in. That will go over great.

How many pre meds do the plan to allow? We are short on MDs. Will they increase funding for residencies?

Is gummint going to force companies to create work study programs? Who carries the financial burden for that?

All of that would be labeled racist and sexist in our current society.

Why. Just as if not more non-black students have useless degrees in the form of fine or liberal arts. Obviously this is because more whites go to college.

There is nothing stopping minorities from getting viable degrees

Need more work apprenticeships or abbreviated college programs

I have nothing against college but I find it difficult to call a lot of people coming out today more educated than someone without a degree.

Attainment =|= education is many cases.

Not giving student loans for worthless Fine Arts degrees would be a good start. They also need to rein in proprietary schools like Delta College, etc. They're very expensive with sketchy results.

Agree with abbreviated programs and apprenticeships 100%.

Not an exhaustive list and doesn't include electives but I took classes like:
English Literature I & II
World Literature I
American Literature I
English Composition I & II
Public Speaking
Pre-Calc Algebra
Calculus I & II
Physics I & II
Applied Statistics
Linear Statistics
World History I & II
General Chemistry I & II
Organic Chemistry I
Instrumental Analysis of Chem
Quantitative Analysis of Chem
Physical Geology I
Hydrogeology
Environmental Law
Environmental Technical Writing
Limnology
Ecology
Biology I & II
Cell Biology
Genetics
Animal Physiology
Invertebrate Zoology
History of the Vertebrates
Plant Taxonomy
Interpretation of Maps/Cartography
Interpretation of Aerial Photos
Geographic Information Systems

I don't see how anyone could take and pass these types of classes without being more educated than someone who did not. I can see an argument that they learned things through the workforce that should be considered equivalent to that education.. but I'd say that is a tall vs wide argument.

I really think they need to drop most elective requirements tbh. I enjoyed learning scuba but it should never stop me from getting my piece of paper.
