It was rumored that she was a victim of DTL but she was never found.

Details of Disappearance

Mari was last seen standing outside a Subway sandwich shop in a strip mall on Louisiana Highway 415 west of Port Allen, Louisiana at 5:30 p.m. on Christmas Eve, 2002.

Investigators believe she was abducted from that location. Mari's belongings were found scattered on the pavement shortly after she disappeared, along with some of her acrylic fingernails which were possibly torn off in her struggle with her abductor. Robbery was probably not the motive for her kidnapping, as her food, purse and keys were left behind and wrapped Christmas presents were found in the backseat of her car.

A surveillance camera videotaped a General Motors pickup truck speeding away from the Subway around the time Mari disappeared. Tire tracks, possibly from the abduction vehicle, were found in the parking lot of the strip mall. The camera also caught the abduction suspect on tape but the image was not of sufficient quality to be used to identify anyone.

At the time of her disappearance, Mari was on her way to visit her husband, Jerry Fowler, a former Louisiana Elections Commissioner who was serving a five-year sentence in a Texas federal prison for bribery. He resigned his position in 1999 and pleaded guilty to receiving kickbacks from voting machine contractors.

Jerry's lawyers tried to get him furloughed from prison so he could help search for Mari, but they were unsuccessful. Investigators don't believe Jerry's criminal activities have anything to do with Mari's abduction. He died in 2009.

Authorities believe Mari's disappearance may be related to Derrick Todd Lee, the so-called Baton Rouge Serial Killer. He has been charged with six other murders, attempted murder, and rape. He has been charged with murder in the disappearance of Randi Mebruer and is considered a suspect in the disappearances of Melinda McGhee and Glenn Tankersley as well. Lee owns a truck similar to the one seen at the site of Mari's abduction, and cellular phone records place him nearby Mari when she was abducted. Police attempted to link Lee and Mari with DNA and were unsuccessful, but many investigators still believe Lee had something to do with Mari's disappearance.

Mari has never been located and neither Lee nor anyone else has been charged in her case. She was declared legally dead in May 2004, seventeen months after she was last seen. Foul play is suspected in her disappearance.

They did try but were never able to prove it without having a body and he died without telling them anything. Is it just a foregone conclusion that he killed her?

Something about his cellphone being pinged within so many feet of the gas station she vanished from.

I didn't know that. I remember people saying he may have thought she was Pam Kinamore's mom. They did look similar.

She was a neighbor of mine and her son believes that DTL was responsible. She was taken from in front of the Subway on La 415.

I remember this. If I recall this was what started the whole "white truck" rumor.. Or maybe it was already a thing, but it added to everyone being more aware of white trucks because I think the GM pickup was white.

Yea, LE really fricked up on the whole "white truck" thing though. Didn't TDL not have a white truck to begin with or am I remembering wrong?

I think Lee borrowed someone's white truck for one of the killings if I'm not mistaken.

If she was dumped in whiskey bay like they possibly thought, they’ll never find her unfortunately.

Wow, I didn't know this. I do recall hearing a rumor that LE interviewed someone under hypnosis so they could remember details of passing a white truck on the interstate over the basin in the middle of the night and seeing what they thought to be a mannequin in the back seat.

No clue if that was just a rumor or if there was validity to that, though.

So sad that she passed away before seeing that piece of shite finally die. Also sad that he didn't die under harsher circumstances than his numerous victims.

FWIW investigative discovery has an episode on DTL in their series “Obsessed” with the woman who supposedly helped get him caught.

When I was in school I worked part time for a local government's building permits and inspection department. Before I started working there, the inspector told me he went inspect an electric pole for Entergy. He pulls up in the parish truck (which was white) and as he gets out a woman is right outside of her door with a shotgun.

He said he got right back in the truck and just gave them the okay on the pole because he wasn't taking any chances.. But that had a lot of people paranoid.

I read a book on this and I kind of forgot a lot of details, but their biggest frick up was sticking to looking for the "textbook" serial killer.

If I recall they received DTLs name a few times, but because he didn't fit the characteristics of a SK they didn't focus much on him at first.

Maybe I am thinking of something else, but didn't they arrest or bring a doctor in for questioning? And for some reason that made the news.
