THe Shining.
His best book; terrible book to make into a movie.
That's why Kubrick played with it; he had too.
The entire movie is a character study and an acting tour de force by Nicholson. He's the entire picture.
Put a bum in that chair writing All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy and the movie is dull as frick. Kubrick gambled and put it on all on Jack's shoulders. If you had a bad actor, that movie is nothing.

Came to post. There are a few other movies that would be much less memorable without him, these in particular IMO:
National Treasure - Face/Off - The Weather Man - Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans - Con Air - Gone in 60 Seconds

Kubrick made that movie happen though.
The actors werent acting torwards the end, I'm not sure Shelley Duvall ever mentally recovered from that film.
It's in my top 5 of all time too.

Basic Instinct without Michael Douglas

Just because I watched it the other night, I'm not sure that Blue Velvet would be considered a great classic without Dennis Hopper. Lynch is obviously a good director but Hopper's performance makes it stand out as a memorable and haunting movie. Could speculate about what plenty of classics would be without certain actors I suppose.

I came to post this almost verbatim.
Nic does have his share of stinkers, but there are a lot of movies I would have never saw without him.
Dark horse candidate, Robin Williams and Aladin. I like Will Smith but we’re about to see what a difference amazing voice talent he is.

Robin Williams elevated every character in a way not many other actors in the history of cinema could do.
You can feel his emotions in every role. Even animated voice roles like Genie.
Guy was an absolute master.

Shawshank would be very forgettable without Morgan freeman.

The Mask W/O Jim Carrey: See the sequel
Strange Brew without the McKenzie Brothers
Wall Street W/O Michael Douglas
Demolition Man Without Stallone/Bullock/Snipes/Leary
Dirty Dancy W/O Swayze
This list could get really long

Some of those castings could have worked.
Ben Stiller could have pulled off a similar Scott Lang. And at a certain point in his career Brendan Fraser as Star Lord would have worked. Cuba could have handled War Machine.
Under no circumstances would I have paid to see Keanu Reeves as Dr. Strange.

I liked the book so much better than the movie. In the book, you see Jack's struggle to fight the evil, and it isn't a foregone conclusion he loses.
In the movie, it's never really in doubt he loses control of himself to the evil.
