coaching question...would it have been totally unreasonable for Hess to pitch the 10th on Sunday? serious question.

Not completely unreasonable if he was a paid professional athlete. Hell its not even that crazy if he was at least an athlete on a full scholarship. I think people forget that these guys aren’t even on full scholarships when they are asking them to do extremely risky things with their body part that is their future earner.

Mainieri said post game Hess went to the pen on his own. Said when he found out he told him to sit immediately

He put himself there. CPM told him to carry his arse back to the dugout when he noticed.

He went out there on his own. When Maineiri saw him he called him back to the dugout.

Last night Ben said he ran down to the bullpen on his own but the coaches shut him down.

I know it's hard for some to understand but a kid's arm and his baseball future are more important than one game.
There are some coaches out there who wouldn't have hesitated to put Hess in the game.
As Mainieri said afterwards... " I do have a conscience."

Unfortunately they put the guy out there that we consider the closer and he didn't get it done.

We saw the writing on the wall when he struggled Friday in the 9th. Plus Sunday was basically BP for both teams.

You could argue that he could have pulled him, but I think by the time you get someone warmed up, the damage was done. And obviously we didn't score in the bottom of the inning.

I actually like this on both ends.

I respect the hell out of Hess for wanting the ball in that situation and taking it upon himself to go warm up.

I respect the hell out of Mainieri for shutting him down and protecting the kid from possibly doing harm to himself.

But this doesn't fit the "LSU is fricking up the kid's arms" narrative that some are pushing on here, so I must be crazy.

I think the word you are looking for is "conscience"...

But otherwise I agree with your post 100%

You could tell CPM was proud of him for going out there, he said it showed what a remarkable kid he was but there was no way he would let him throw
