I have a small patch of my yard that has this grass in it. Can anyone help ID. This is in Northern Alabama...
Is it just a really thin fescue? I also acknowledge I need to remove some thatch.

It looks like bahia grass, but I don't think it's come out yet. That's the grass that will shoot up those antenna things in the summer time.
Grab at the base and see if you can pull up a runner of the grass. Often times, it will look a little purple right at the base of the grass by the roots.

I’d guess fescue, blue grass or rye.

Blades are too thin for fescue at least KY 31. Gotta be a cool season my guess is ryegrass.

Fescue. It appears the blades are shaped like thin triangles which is fescue.
k31 is a very old and essentially outlawed type of fescue since it gave cows a fungal infection. Many fescues are thin bladed this days. They look a lot like bluegrass but fescue grows in clumps where as bluegrass is a turf grass.
The grass is a bit sparse but does appear to grow in clumps. as it thickens, the clumps will get bigger.
Thatch is also not an issue for Fescue. Thatch only matters for turf grasses.
