What is a “bad person” though?

Does a bad decision in the heat of the moment forever taint you? Wrong place, wrong time, wrong decision and you are forever damned?

There are plenty of actually bad people, rotten souls who will never see the inside of a cell. Stories every day of those with power and influence getting a slap on the wrist for things for which other men will be locked away forever.

I doubt all prisons are like this. Some are just schools for criminals to become better (worse) criminals. You see so many repeat offenders, the ones continually locked up and released only to cause harm again...they aren’t being rehabilitated. They aren’t learning anything positive to society.

Perhaps we need reform, a way to cull those with good still in them from the herd of the wretched and give them a chance to repair their brokenness and become a light in the world of darkness. Instead of throwing them into the dark to be forgotten and choke out any good that might be left.

It depends. What were those artists found guilty of?

If you make it to Angola you've got to be pretty bad at decision making.

You’re being dramatic. They are prisoners at Angola making nice crafts to pass the time, which is all they have. If I didn’t have to spend my time working or being a productive member of society, I could make some intricate things as well. Are there some good guys that did some bad shite in Angola? Sure, but that’s not my problem

I hear you, and it would be the Christian thing to do, but what if the talented boat builder had murdered one of your loved ones. Would it still be possible for you to see the good in them and see them released? I didn’t know any of the folks involved in that Lake Charles bank robbery and associated murders so many years ago, but it still bothers me that Wilbert Rideau went from the death penalty to walking free on the streets because he learned to be a decent writer in prison. I believe he admitted his guilt, so not a wrongful conviction.

Consequences to every choice.

I have to live with my choices good or bad. Some negative results came from heat of the moment. It never required the law to be involved but forever changed the course of my life.

That’s how life works and yes, it’s often tragic to watch it happen to good people, but that is how it all works.

I can meet you halfway on the general idea that we as a society shouldn't "lock em all up and throw away the key", that some folks can be reformed and that it should be one of the goals of incarceration along with punishment.
