I think that depends on if you're talking about his ability as a musician or if you're including his songwriting (specifically lyrics) ability. Don't let this FACT

You may still be right, I really have no opinion on this, but amongst the musical world Robertson is fairly highly regarded from what I've read. Perhaps, though, that is influenced by his propensity to undeservedly take credit for what others did.

I do love The Band. And I was always perplexed that a Canadian could have written all those songs that sounded like they had so much southern influence. It wasn't until years later I found out that Robertson took credit for things Levon wrote and Levon apparently quietly took that for the sake of the band.

By almost all accounts, Helms was a great person to work with and Robertson was an arrogant, self centered douchebag.

robbie robertson was/is one of the greatest guitarists of all time.
that dude could play anything

recall that it was robbie who played when Dylan went electric
