I was thinking about getting some shitake spore plugs and giving it a go. Was wondering if anyone has had success doing this before and with what species/substrate.Ive always wanted to try, but it could end up being an expensive waste of time. TIA

My father and his friend can grow morels. That is the only people I know who do such a thing.

My roommate did it in his closet in college. His interests weren't, uh, culinary. It seemed like he did go through a good bit of trouble but nothing ridiculous. Have to be sterile and control the conditions reasonably well. I don't think it was all that expensive just kind of a long process with a decent chance it would get contaminated and fail somewhere along the way.

Mushroom Maggie

This is a good article on them. They grow in St Francisville and I’ve bought at the farmers market. Might be able to contact them as they are very much enthusiastic about it and will talk to you about.

I also have a friend who forages quite a bit around the Felicianas and does well. He carries a field guide which I think I might buy.

Thanks man! That's a great resource. I'll let you know how it goes. I'm gonna try to do shitake and oysters

Try mushroom mountain. The guy sells a sporulated plastic bag of oak shavings. You sit it on a counter, water it and mushrooms grow like crazy. Several varieties of mushrooms also.

Good friend of mine in Leesville grows multiple species of mushrooms. He sells them at the Alexandria Farmers Market and to local restaurants

I'm honestly kind of tempted to try their black and white morel spawn kits. I've done a bit of foraging here and have never found a morel. South louisiana is pretty good for boletes and chanterelles but I really haven't found much more than that

Morel's seem to stop at a certain latitude. I'm guessing they need more frost days or it gets too hot for too long or something along those lines. You may be able to put them in a freezer or something though.
