I've lived in the suburbs in three major cities in the country and worked downtown. All three of those cities are now shiteholes....literally. In one of those cities I was caught downtown in the middle of a race riot. I really thought I would not get out alive. I stood terrorized as one young black rioter approached me as I stood on the street corner waiting to catch the last bus leaving downtown (they shut down bus service because rioters were breaking the windows on the busses). He came within six inches of my face and said, "Are shaking in your pants honky?" I caught that last bus leaving "Dodge" as the rioters looted stores and walked on top of cars filled with workers trying to flee downtown.
You didn't say where you live, but I assume it's near a big city. Remember this......you feel secure right now. Your neighborhood is peaceful and secure. But things can change.......and they will. Most of our big cities are led by democrats and many are sanctuary cities. As long as the welfare state continues to feed and support these inner city demons you will be somewhat safe. But if (and when) the system breaks down, those rats will come out of the inner city and enter your neighborhoods. Care to guess what they will do to you and your family?
Trust me my friend when that happens, you will wish you lived in Smallville, USA.
So I would suggest, if you're able, pack your family and get out of the suburbs surrounding big cities. The "bagging groceries at the market" comment was just a not so effective way of emphasizing the benefits of Smallville.
Whether you accept it or not.....this country is collasping, and the collaspe is starting in the inner city. Trust me, the welfare babies will get to you soon enough.

Why specify the hometown a person grew up in if this is some sort of obligation?
That person was the product of two parents who were raised in a community(ies).
And the parents had parents of their own, so a debt is also owed to the communities of the grandparents’ lives.

For the record, I stood there face to face with Tyrone the Rioter and never backed down. I never responded....he was bigger than I was and much younger. But for sure I was thinking of my children and wife waiting back home in the suburbs. Trust me all kind of shite crosses your mind when you figure you're about to die.
I'm not a violent man, I avoid violence. After all I just wanted to work and support my family. Millions of folks like me want to do the exact same thing......support themselves and their families. I'm just saying doing that in (or near) a big city is getting harder and more dangerous. Your boss and his boss live in gated communities. Folks like Nancy Pelosi et al live in gated communities also. We live in the real world. I thought my company would send security services to protect me and my fellow workers when the riot broke out. They didn't. In the end we were left to fend for ourselves. So basically we were expendable.
Oh, did I mention the police union in that big city were involved in a wage dispute with City Hall? Even rumors of a strike by police. These things happen you know.
Bottom line.....get the frick out of "Dodge" if you can.

Specifically for the writer's case, she is leaving the culturally diverse ultra inclusive progressive utopia of Portland to return to the homogeneous conservative backwards town in Minnesota that she probably "escaped" from in the first place. Probably realized how well she had it back home, where there was next to no crime, low cost of living, and ultimately the community cares about you in a genuine way, not the made for instagram altruism virtue signaling care for your neighbors.
I think she just got tired of carrying around her white guilt, its got to be exhausting feeling responsible for everything wrong with the world.

Been there and did that. My advice. Go home and volunteer coaching T-Ball or bake cookies for the residents at the assisted living facility in your hometown. Heck of a lot less looneytune people to deal with and you know clearly who to avoid.
Our big cities and suburbs are an absolute disaster. Watch out where you walk on the sidewalks.....unless you enjoy walking on feces and used syringes and needles.

By the way, I take public transportation most days of the week and the typical experience is people simply listening to something on their headphones and scrolling on their phone. It's actually generally really pleasant.
