Finished the top on Sat. Top took longer than I expected as a couple of board were thicker that’s the others. Tried to use the belt sander but it just didn’t get it flat like I wanted. Smooth but not flat.
Pulled out the #4 plane and went to work. Took about 30 min and got it where I wanted it and the. Hit it with some 220 and rounded the edges and it was good to got. Attached the base and my part is done.
Wife now has to decide on a color (it’s poplar so it will be painted).

Very nice work! I know that most paint poplar but looking at the photo you have provided there is some very nice poplar boards. May I suggest a light stain and a poly finish? I hate to see paint over such nice wood and work.

Hey I'm looking for a good set of chisels that won't break the bank. I have diamond and whetstones so I don't have a problem with sharpening. What should I be looking at?

I all honesty there are 2 ways to go with this question. A true neanderthal hobbyist will spend $$$ on a nice set of chisels, some of the Japanese and high quality american made can run up to hundreds of dollars. I personally use just a few chisels as a hobbyist and have a set of Craftsman chisels for over 20 years, they are well made, easy to sharpen and a set can be had for less than 50.00. Irwin and Stanley both also makes a nice set, yes they have plastic handles and don't have the beauty of an expensive set. Mine stay in a drawer so it really does not matter .

I've got a set of Narex Chisels that are great. Take and hold an edge well enough for me and they won't break the bank.

I enjoy my lathe so the next set of chisels I need I am going to just by the chisel parts and turn the handles, I have some Ipe and Jatoba cut offs that will make perfect handles.

I've been pretty happy with my Narex set, too.

Is it typical to have a 1 1/16" chisel over a 1". I know it's metric but do you just cut a 1 1/16" mortis instead?

I drill out and the square up with a chisel. Here is a link to Fine Woodworking that shows several ways to do it. Some day I want to get a dedicated mortise machine. Also depending on the look you can do half lap joints and use biscuits on some...That is the fun of the hobby is most things can be done at least 6 different ways.

Where do y'all buy your wood besides box stores?

I have a set of 2 cherries. They're great. Unbelievably sharp. I sharpen them with a sharpening jig from Lee Valley and sand paper on a granite block. Actually need to get ahold of my Lie-Neilsen plane blade with it.
I use wet dry sand paper down to 3000 or so and then use a leather strop. It gives them a mirror finish and incredibly sharp edge.
They're metric but it's pretty easy to convert.
And, I have injured myself more times with chisels than pretty much any other tool maybe combined...
When they hit skin they tend to go deep.

Thank you.
Wife actually looked at a stain y-day. Not sure it will stick but it's up to her.

Yea. Brazos can't be the only supplier.

Stine in Walker usually has some maple and red oak S1S. Acadian hardwoods in Ponchotula also has a nice selection.
