My question is, since lights have come a long way, is there anything out there that could be used in lieu of Coleman lantern? A specific headlamp maybe?

With the exception of getting burned by the Coleman, it is about all you need. A LPG Coleman with a reflective shield was almost perfect. And your gig though not state of the art was deadly effective also. I don't see why you need to really upgrade from that nearly perfect setup but I understand we are in the modern times so LEDs and batteries may be nice but are not needed.

With a quick look on the internet I'm not sure Coleman makes the handle reflector lantern accessory anymore.

I have several deflectors for the Coleman. I was just thinking of a more hands free-like a headlamp. The gig is perfect for me because it is one hand since it’s heavy.

A friend is moving his 100’ houseboat to Chandeleur Islands next week until the fall. I intend to use it often.
