You are a fricking moron. You have an attorney with you when you are accused or whether you might be accused of something, not whether you are “guilty” or “innocent”.

so if my boss walks into my office and asks if I embezzled money from the company, and I didn't do it, I'm supposed to hire an attorney before I tell my boss "no, I didn't do it"???

Not in an employment setting. I was an administrator or department director for over 30 years and had many folks in my office to discuss alleged or suspected bad or criminal behavior. None of those folks had a lawyer. Some confessed, some lied.
