Basketball is just the holdover sport between football and baseball. Glad it's over for the year.
I love baseball, but it's slow and not nearly as exciting. There is a reason why March Madness has tons of viewers.

Then why do it

One situation is called a flagrant 1 the other is called a flagrant 2

I'm guessing instead of truck nuts, you have a bottle of Summer's Eve on your hitch?

Then why do it
You accept the short term disadvantage for another possession.
The team that is winning often fouls too.
Here is a popular scenario. Say Virginia is up by 1 and they get fouled with 5 seconds left. They make both free throws and are now up 3. Now it's Texas Tech's ball with 5 seconds left and down 3. Virginia may choose to foul Texas Tech with just a couple seconds left to prevent them from even attempting a 3-pointer.
Intentionally fouling is akin to a quarterback spiking the ball in football to stop the clock.

A flagrant 1 is a hard foul. It counts like a technical. Flagrant 2 is an overly excessive foul and the player gets ejected.

I have a problem with this as well. Should be intentional grounding.

But fouling in basketball IS consistent. You can take a foul just the same in the first minute of the game.

The intentional foul. If you grab a player intentionally in the first quarter it is called as so.
If you grab a player intentionally in the final minute it is called as a simple personal.
I would love for them to start calling more intentional fouls near the end of games when players are just trying to foul instead of going for the ball. It would only make the game better.
