Like the FBI can’t record conversations over a burner phone The fact that the conversation was recorded by the FBI wasn’t on anyone’s mind untill the Self tapes leaked out. By then the damage was done and you can bet every coach in college basketball is still sweating all of this.
Hint hint.....Will Wade isn’t the only coach that was recorded, just the only one leaked so far

Yeah, the burner phone only would have worked if he were texting like Bill Self did. In which case, without names being mentioned in the texts, the FBI couldn't prove who was talking. Bill Self DID text, but didn't use a burner phone. That's particularly dumb, because when you text, even if you delete it, the FBI probably has a way to dig it back up. So by using his regular phone to do that, he really showed no discretion.

But they can’t prove you said it if they can’t draw the records back to a personal phone like in Wade’s case. That’s why you use a burner phone.
