I planted these about 3 years ago as some 15 ft high or so trees but they are still pretty skimpy. Does anyone have any large shummard oak trees? If so do they produce a decent shade canopy? I was considering digging these up and planted drake elms, but I hate to throw 3 years away.

I'm know as Mr. Shumard.

How big were they when you planted? Were they in a container?

Looks like they are just now coming out of dormancy. They will make a lovely thick canopy, just give them a chance.

Are you watering and fertilizing them?

They should only be staked for the first year.

They'll get huge...it'll just take around 50-100 years

My brother planted one seven years ago. It's growing into a really beautiful tree. The fall color was spectacular.
I guess it's around 20-25' tall with a 15-20' diameter canopy now. Be patient and you'll be rewarded with some really nice trees.

They were similar height, probably in 5 gallon container , maybe a little taller. Not as many branches though. However the guy at the tree nursery advised me to trim off the top 3 feet of each tree in order to make them grow more canopy-like. (Not sure if this was right thing to do but we did it) now I don’t really have a lead branch to increase in height, I assume another branch will take off upward?

Yes I have been fertilizing in march of each year.
I use the pellet fertilizer sprinkled around the base and I dug little fist size holes all around the tree dropping pellets in each hole forming a ring around base. I keep mulch on top of base and water it with hose when it does not rain much.

The reason the trees are currently staked is because I moved them 10 feet forward this January. They were originally right where that black fence is (we hadn’t planned on ever getting a fence there but plans changed)
I fertilized last week and they are blooming this week.

Could you post a picture of it?

So it would be a bad idea to scrap them and plant drake elms?

I think I’ll be patient and just keep them, I just was to eventually have some shade in the back yard.

I have done google image search of them and have seen those beautiful pictures. I just am skeptical that my skimpy trees could ever fill out like that as one of them only seems to be growing branches on one side mostly
I guess I’m just impatient and need to relax

I like the look of that tree. Was looking at drake elms also. I need to plant something soon.

They will get big but, they don't like wet feet. So if the top of the rootball was too low when you planted them, they will struggle. I always tell people to make sure the top of the rootball is 1 to 2" above surrounding grade.

If you planted at ground level you’ll be ok.

Transplanting this January will definitely stunt them. They will take a while to reestablish lost roots. No more fertilizer until they do.

In my opinion, you should have not topped them. That’s an old practice and surely not used for container trees.
You will need to reestablish a new leader by proper pruning.

Going to have to be patient, but the payoff will be worth it.

So I need to get up there on a ladder and prune top to make a single branch coming up?

Yes you will likely have to prune to establish a main leader. Sometimes this happens naturally as one will dominate. You can wait and see.

Here's a great website to poke around and learn:

The way the top of my 2 trees are now
I don’t know how I could even prune to a new leader

Nice man how tall was it when planted?

Looks like it has more than one lead branch

It was maybe 10' when he planted it. He pruned it for the first time this year. And he just removed the bottom branches so he could get the lawn mower under it.

That looks awesome man
I hope mine spreads out pretty like that

I’m sure it’ll have stunted growth again from me moving it
