If I had a good relationship with my boss, and i got caught doing or saying something that may sound as if i may have done something against the rules, my boss would likely want to talk to me before meeting with HR and the higher ups, hear my story, and talk about the best action moving forward.

If i had a bad relationship with my boss, we might not have that conversation, and i just get called into the meeting with everyone and they are likely out to get me fired.
