Started a thread about not understanding why parents put their kids in travel ball...has a kid in travel ball. WTF? If your daughter gets a soccer scholarship this thread will come full circle. Bump if so.

The parent would be better off sticking that money in a high yield savings account

1) If these parents legitimately care about a college scholarship then they better hope the kid gets one for baseball because he’s not going to get one through academic means based on the weak cognitive genes of his parents who don’t understand how a mutual fund works
2) Most parents use the idea of a scholarship to justify living vicariously through their children. If they actually cared about their kid they’d promote a broad range of activities to prepare them for life outside of the home, where being well-rounded is valuable and being an average middle infielder isn’t considered a worthwhile skill.

I pile on travel ball because:
1) it's the epitome of the middle class suburban trashiness/cheesiness that is fun as hell to make fun of (see Middle Class Fancy)
2) IRL I've seen it make people completely miserable. Plus trucking your kids around the region and spending way more money than you should so that perhaps one of them gets a scholly to Southeastern Technical State College to play baseball just seems shortsighted.

Take that money, put it in the bank. You will have more than enough to pay for their college.

Says the DB without kids

he people who typically sign their kids up for travel ball and want to live through them on travel ball are the parents who weren’t ever good enough athletically to participate in any sport at a more advanced level. It’s common, and I see it quite often.

What do we mean by "live through them"
From what I've seen it has little to do with enjoying a sport you liked through your kid's life, but instead having something to throw in the face of Mike down the street who just got a better boat but his kid is in the band.

A guy I work with has spent 8-10K a year on travel ball since his daughter was 9 years old. She's maximized her ability and as a senior she's a pretty good HS player, but that's all. She may be able to walk on at a smaller school, but she's not getting a scholly. He could have saved up all that money and be able to pay her full tuition anywhere she wants to go.
Was scholarship the goal though? Maybe she just liked playing and he support led her hobby

He thought she had a chance the first few years. By the time it was clear she wasn't scholarship material it had taken on a life of its own.

I don’t have kids but my feeling is: if your kid can play, they can play. I sure as hell aren’t hiring personal trainers and flying them across the country for camps
Ain’t nothing wrong with telling your kid “No”

Sounds good, but more likely Sulphur or Grenada, MS.

So the kid has supportive parents who want to see them succeed and be a part of their life, yet you blame the parents for wanting to “live through them?” Lmao I’ve heard it all

What I don’t get is the extracurricular shite. Having a signing ceremony for 8 year olds and awarding a ring for every damn tournament

Well that's pretty stupid paying that kind of money on travel ball in hopes of a scholarship, when baseball or softball only give partial scholarships.

To each their own, but I don't see how spending hours and hours watching your kid stand on a field is that great. We spent a lot of time with our kids outdoors, camping, hiking, biking, scuba diving traveling to interesting places where being actually together and talking to each other.

My kids were non-athletes that excelled in academics, now have great careers with excellent incomes instead of having to sell cars for a living like the ex-college baseball players with a degree in PE.

Why dont you ask guys like Bregman and Nola if they regret doing travel ball?
Your right, it's not for everyone and some kids just don't have the God-given talents. There's no shame in that, but there are lessons we can teach kids that some SJW teacher will never be able to offer in the classroom - comroddery, discipline, etc.
Now as it relates to cost, yes it costs money but I always tell parents it's not about whether or not you can afford it... everyone can afford it. It's about whether or not you want to make the sacrifice for your kids to be set up to be successful.
