Watched a few races last year, and everyvrace so far this year.

Other than the race he was winning then had some kind of engine/mechanical problem, it seems like Ferrari’s strategy has really fricked leclerc in the other 3 races this year. Even when he’s been faster than vettel.

I think I get that vettel is the #1 driver so they want to keep him happy. But Mercedes is not sacrificing bottas in favor of Hamilton, at least not yet while bottas is still a legitimate contender.

Is that accurate? Any insight into why?

The FCA president was in the crowd today. My guess is they kept Lec so long so the pres could see Ferrari leading the race

Ok, then he saw leclecrc leading for 15 or so laps until it became obvious Mercedes was about to pass him. Wouldn’t it have made more sense to pit leclerc earlier so the important guy didn’t see him getting overtaken by the 2 drivers from the rival team?

After more thought it might have made more sense leaving him out. LEC had to go to the soft and those tires were shite, for everyone.

They switch him sooner and he gets caught then falls way off.

Obviously, no one saw the softs being so bad today.

Lando switched to the softs under the VSC and Stroll picked up 7 seconds on him. Not sure what happened there

Isn’t Mercedes trolling them every race penalty enough?

This is a bit of a surprise (for me at least). Zandvoort (in the Netherlands) is expected to replace Catalunya next year. If you thought the dust in Baku was bad...

Motorsport.com article

Zandvoort is a really cool track but it's right next to a beach so sand on the track will be an issue. What surprises me is that they were willing to pay for the upgrades to bring it up to F1 standards, both in terms of facilities and the track itself.

From driving it in sims, Zandvoort is very cool, but it doesn't seem appropriate for modern F1. It's an old-school narrow track and it seems like not enough passing zones.

Also, even though it's a relatively new track, I think of Catalunya as one of the core F1 tracks. The teams love testing there, so I think they would be pissed if there's no race there.

I think the Autosport podcast mentioned difficulties negotiating a deal with the track, which was compounded by Fernando Alonso not being in F1 anymore (which I guess was a big draw).

It's not in any of the sims I've driven but I'd have to agree with this.

I always thought so too. I can't imagine not having the Spanish GP on the calendar. But...

This is the real problem. As I mentioned in an earlier post, tracks are having to rely on government subsidies to make any money off of F1 events because FOM is squeezing every nickel until the buffalo shits. When those subsidies dry up, the track can't host the event anymore and F1 goes elsewhere. At least this time they're going to a purpose-built track instead of an ad hoc street circuit.

Dutch GP has been heating up ever since Max came on the scene. Money seems to be a huge holdup.

Street Circuits are the best opportunity to see races in non-oligarchy states, less investment building purpose-built F1 tracks. FOM demands so much funding and it reaches such a small audience. Maybe Liberty can change some things in the future to expand the audience.

FYI - Google maps will let you drive around the grid. Holy shite it is narrow.

max driving an older f1 car around it.

Yeah I get that. But street circuits suck.

Also, when you're even having a discussion about replacing a historic track like Silverstone with a street circuit in London, something is broken.

Hopefully F1 cars move back to about the size of current IndyCars in 2021

Truth. There should be a race at Silverstone and one in downtown London. That is extreme, but the general idea. Run races where there are fans.

That is if we are talking about bringing the fans back into the sport.

Hopefully, both mercedes cars crash.

My excitement level for this season is right about 0 right now.

If the cars werent so awesome and fast. I'm still more mesmerized buy the technology than the actual drivers. The need to just remove limits and let them go.
