What if you traded 2 yellows = red and adopt hockey rules

Set up a penalty box to where called fouls resulted in timed man advantages (with the time based on the severity).
Players could still be sent off for egregious fouls, but the man advantage would be limited to the 5 minute major like in hockey.
There would need to be a revision of the substitution rules (you could replace a sent off player after the penalty even if you were out of subs).
Thoughts?

The penalty box exists in hockey because you can't be punished any other way. You can't restart with a direct shot or anything other than a penalty shot. So it doesn't make sense in football. Fouls are a constant part of the game, to mess with players' heads about contact sounds horrible.

I'd be ok with something like that, but haven't given much thought to how I would want it implemented.

Leave the sin bin for Rugby

Could possibly work for indoor leagues. But still a no for me.

If we're going to make a major rule change, I'd rather do something with the clock. Clearly define what makes up stoppage time and add a second clock to keep track of it, or stop the clock any time stoppage time is being accrued and end the game at 45' and 90'.

the 4th official does this

No shite, but still no one knows what it is until they hold the board up, then the ref can add time to it, no one but the ref really knows how much time is left, and the rules don't clearly state what constitutes stoppage time so everyone is always confused over how they got the number that is show.
I'm trying to take more influence out of the refs' hands. There's no reason to have all of this ambiguity at the end of each half.

If I were to make one rule change to soccer, it would be of the basketball variety. The guy getting fouled has to take the pen

What if we got rid of offside?
Posted on 3/10/19 at 7:29 pm to theOG
If you’ve ever played 7 a side you will know why no offside is a bad idea
You’ll end up with one striker stood 20 yards out all game and defensive lines alongside him. Horrible for the game

But, doesn't a first yellow do this anyway? The fear of another = red and your side is down a man for the rest of the match?

Transparency around added time would be ideal for all. It's in players, managers, spectators, and referees interests except when corruption is in play.
I wouldn't be surprised if at some point the Laws are tweaked to have the referee indicate when the clock is stopped, and the stadium/broadcast clock stops accordingly. Official time kept by the 4th. And we end at 45'.
frickery around time is not ancient history, that shite goes down today. Why FIFA isn't proactive about it I have no idea (I do - they're useless).
And stoppages impacting added time are actually fairly well outlined in the Laws - injuries, subs, timewasting, and anything crazy. A big problem is even outside of frickery, we don't have standardization around what constitutes things like timewasting. Thus by knowing what referees regard as same we can get to a more universal standard.

quote:Sure but a yellow is for something more malicious or unsporting or persistent infringement. If we're introducing a box for every foul then that's a bit much. And it'll kill the flow of the game, just think about 5x more substitutes a game worth of players walking off the pitch.
But, doesn't a first yellow do this anyway? The fear of another = red and your side is down a man for the rest of the match?
Maybe 3 light fouls or something gets you 5 minutes in a box...but that's approaching yellow territory anyway.

Try stopping the clock? If we are concerned with slowing the game, maybe just inside 5 minutes when it is out of play or GK has the ball?

Why would you stop the clock when the GK has the ball? The ball is still in play.
