For a long time the number held steady at 300-350 million, while record numbers of guns were being sold. There have been more than 300 million NICS checks since it was setup. This is not the number of new guns sold. Some are used guns, some are transfers, but NICS is done per transaction, not per gun and most states with a concealed carry license, do not require a NICS check.

With all that being said, 600 million is entirely possible and probably likely.

I would believe it I own 3 myself, my brother has 3 my dad has 5 and my mom has 2. This isn't including the ones we lost in our tragic boating accident last yet.
