Take it slow at first. People who were athletes and worked out diligently for years often think they can just go in and go balls to the wall.

Yep, if you do a linear program, I'd start lighter than you think you have to and just ride the linear progression as long as it runs.
I came from an athletic background and learning not to push is harder than pushing myself. Be better than me.
