Alive? Should be Clapton. He's forgot more than what most modern day speed virtuosos know.

And yet did he ever utilize his guitar chops to the end of making a song better than it would have otherwise been?

Technical skills are irrelevant in answering this question. Jimmy Page, for example, is absolutely a better guitarist than Clapton, regardless of technical chops. The guitar is a tool; it is not the end game. The end game is the song.

He says in the video description, "Looped through a Boomerang pedal."

The first one I linked was the same video but not from Mayer and so without the description. I edited it and posted the original with the description, and so I was able to answer this myself -- despite having no knowledge whatsoever of guitar accoutrements -- through a few google searches.

Those of you who are musicians are going to laugh at me on this, but I had no idea you could do that with a guitar (i.e. loop a portion that you already played while playing over top of that portion). I seriously didn't. My mind is so blown right now.

I won't say Paige invented guitar-riff based songs -- because he didn't -- but he certainly popularized and perfected what was not previously a genre.

"But but but, Clapton has fast fingers." Don't care.

Who is a live performing guitar player today that is better than Trey?

I'm not super familiar with his live performances, but I came here to say Mike McCready.

As an aside I believe and have heard that Keith Urban is unreal as well. Probably not best in the world though.

I like Gary Clark Jr, but I wouldn't have him anywhere near the top of a best guitarist list.

Same here. I like his music a lot and he puts on a great live show. But as far as being a great guitar player...he's solid but not great. But that's not what his music is about.

I'd put Jeff Beck or Mark Knopfler at the top of the list. Beck has the most unique style of anybody I know of. He's simultaneously working the strings, volume knob and whammy bar and he does stuff that other humans just can't do.

Knopfler is often overlooked because he is so understated but if you really listen to his playing, there is a lot of subtlety in it. He has oodles and oodles of feel.

Al DiMeola. Both electric and acoustic.

I've seen him live a few times and enjoyed it a lot. I have his first album on vinyl, though it seems like he never really knew what he wanted to do on it. A lot of the songs work really well individually but collectively the album is a bit of a mess and has no cohesiveness or flow. I don't care for his last album at all outside of 2-3 songs. What he has put out so far from his next release has been kinda meh, too. His live album is really good, though.

Knopfler is fricking awesome. "Down to the Waterline" is one of my all-time favorite songs. The guitar in that song is so ridiculous. It is tasteful and insanely technical at the same time, but it is really subtle.

Best combo of technical skill and feel all-time for me is probably SRV, but Gilmour is my favorite.

All-time I agree that Clapton was the best classical guitarist. Derek Trucks will be there when he's done. Marcus King is another young guy to pay attention to. And Lukas Nelson is awesome, but he's rougher around the edges.

I was curious what others thought and found a Rolling Stone article that had:

4) Keith Richards

3) Jimmy Page

2) Eric Clapton

1) Jimi Hendrix

Saw Laur Jomets play at a brewery with Drivin and Crying in GA in December in front about 500 people. Great talent but what a drop off from Sturgill land. Dude should go out on his own.

(Also saw him twice with Sturgill. Awesome.)

Best" does not equal "most talented/technical" - hence there are a myriad of responses here.

Many that have been mentioned are not very good at all in the grand scheme of things; many are incredibly good.

Nobody here specifies genre, that matters a lot, or even electric vs acoustic instruments. Consider this, Renee Martinez was SRV's guitar tech, and is now John Mayer's tech. Renee is a formally schooled near virtuoso classical guitarist who tours and performs on his own. He plays material that SRV, Mayer, or any guitarist listed in this thread would not be able to play anywhere but in their dreams. Same can be said of the many mostly unknown studio players, and jazz performers. Need to specify at a minimum best "electric blues guitarist", etc.

Would be funny, except it's absolutely true.

or if you'd like, kindly compile a list of all the bands pre-LZ that were building songs from heavy metal guitar riffs. Take as much time as you need.
