I usually get them for free when I just ask. What type of sim is it?

For the Nighthawk M1, it is a micro sim I believe.
One thing to be cautious of... I was doing some research and came across this feed on a reddit thread:

Obviously, don't believe everything you read on the internet, but just thought I'd share what I saw.

FYI - there are more and more reports coming from ATT internal reports that the prepaid ipad plan loophole that you're using is going to be closed up at some point in the near future. I hope you have a backup plan.
No backtracking there. Using a plan intended for a tablet in a hotspot device is a violation of the terms of service. The Unlimited DataConnect plan is for iPads and tablets, that's it. It works in other devices because as of right now the BROADBAND APN works for hotspots (for now).
" Data: Tethering allowed only with 5GB plan. "
IMEI numbers and proper entitlements are about to become really important.
Sources please
So a little while ago it was possible to have IMEI mismatch on a bunch of stuff. People were on the 100GB WHPI and popping it into Nighthawks. Doesn't work now. Hotspot enforcement is coming to all plans. September 2018 was the target end date for all throttle rollouts to consumer, postpaid Unlimited plans. Wireless Home Phone and Internet, in effect.
It's coming to everything.
What do you mean by “hotspot enforcement”?
Just signifies the backend systems that now monitor, count and allow for hotspot data on a multitude of plans. Plus IMEI requirements for certain entitlements and such.
